Movie Premiere, Expanding the Legacy of Brown County Artist, Charlene Marsh

World Wide Facebook Movie Premier!

This video was produced by Emmy award winning producer, Ron Prickel, for WTIU as part of their annual fundraiser and the movie premiered worldwide on Facebook on February 12, 2019. The film originally aired on regional television stations in south central Indiana.  I was in the TV studio, on air, live, during the initial airing.  Unfortunately, most of my friends, family, fans, and collectors were unable to view this film due to the limited broadcast region.  So I am pleased to make this film clip available to be viewed online by everyone worldwide for the first time ever!

Beginning to End

The movie premiere video shows the creation of a hand dyed wool, tufted tapestry, from beginning to end, for the Brown County Public Library.  This technique was also used to create all the yoga mat designs.  Ron and his film crew came out many times over several months to film the creation of this tapestry.  The film documents dyeing and winding the yarn, designing the piece, the tufting process, and includes the final installation at our local public library.  This is an incredible piece of film that I am very grateful has been created, documenting the process for posterity.

Series

I made the tufted tapestries for over twenty five years.  I created several series of pieces that included geometric designs and story telling designs with shifting perspectives.  Imagery included animals, devils, angels, cityscapes, and landscapes.  One recurring series over the years was the Yoga Chakra rugs that I made to use in my own yoga practice.

Hand Made Yoga Rugs

I’ve actually never purchased a commercial yoga mat!   They just never appealed to me at all!  Ever since I made the first Yoga Chakra rug in 1987, I harbored a desire to print my designs on a high quality yoga mat.  I would check around periodically to see if there was any way to create the mats I envisioned.  But, unfortunately, I kept hitting a brick wall.

That is, until 2018, when I discovered a new, patent pending printing process where full color designs could be printed on 100% natural tree rubber.  The result is a high quality, gorgeous yoga mat featuring sacred geometry, the chakras, and mandalas.  Exciting new designs can be developed using both my fiber art designs and my oil paintings.

I love practicing on these mats!  Rotating between all five designs, I can tap into my mood for the day.  Each one has special features in the design that I particularly love.  They are a joy to use.

Taking Your Practice to New Levels

Most yogis are practicing on plain, boring, slippery, smelly, toxic, yoga mats. So I have created extraordinarily beautiful, full color mats that are super grippy, all natural, and odorless so you can have a peaceful, enlightening, and healthy experience while practicing yoga or meditating.

Go HERE to purchase an incredible yoga mat for yourself or someone you love.  I ship via USPS Priority Mail within 1-2 business days, usually within 24 hours, so you will receive your mat very quickly.  Get started this week taking your practice to new levels!

Studies

When studying Fine Art and English at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, I focused on both painting and textile design.  While taking every textile class in the art department, including printed and dyed textiles and woven and constructed textiles, I also took clothing construction and design classes in what was then the Home Economics Department.  Working for the Elizabeth Sage Antique Textile Collection was a very valuable experience, too.  Studying painting with Professor Barry Gealt, I earned an A+ in my first oil painting class, much to my surprise.  I guess showing up 15 minutes early and being set up ready to go when the prof walked in at the start of class didn’t hurt any!  Ha!

And, now, I see all these disciplines coming together not only with the yoga mats but upcoming new releases including clothing and home and lifestyle products.  Very exciting time!  Stay tuned for new products coming soon!

Thanks for following along!

Cheers,

Charlene

Your art inspires me! You are so right about excitement and discovery being necessary in every piece (or as I think about it in relation to asana, in every yoga pose or at least practice!). I’ve been practicing on your mat here in Florida and can attest to the “grippiness,” even when there’s a light fog misting the mat. That’s something I’ve not had when practicing outside. After almost a year, I still disappear into the light of the chakras as I look down. In other words, it hasn’t just become a thing between me and the floor. I’ve had deluxe mats that have not worn well, but this one is standing the test of time and heavy use. Thanks Charlene!

Wow, Lee! This is so great to hear! I am thrilled to learn that the mat is working even in a light fog misting the mat. That’s incredible. Really glad to hear the mat is holding up over time. So poetic…”I disappear into the light of the chakras…” Thanks so much for your comment! Cheers, Charlene

    Dearest Charlene
I found your site by accident and I am in awe of your creativity, artistry, patience and grace. I cannot believe all of the time that is put into your work. I l have watched this video ,3 times already. I know that I could have the patience and endurance to do this but your gifts are so unique and cannot be replicated. I have always known that I am surrounded by 100’s of angels and a few demons and therefore I love your Portal tapestry and Yoga Chakra rugs.
I’m 68 years and I am watching you work and saying to myself. “I would love to do that!” You are a genius!! I would like to know if any of your tapestries are for sale. However, they must be priceless because they are magnificent.
thank you for sharing your gifts.
    Peace. Patricia

      Hi, Patricia,

Wow! Thanks for your great comments! I am really honored!

Thankfully, angels surround us and help protect us from the demons!

Yes, some of the tapestries are available but, yes, they are pretty pricey. Let me know if you would like a quote on one in particular. I should post some in the shop for others who may be interested in purchasing — maybe I’ll add that to my to-do list.

Thank you again, and have a fabulous day!

      Cheers,
      Charelne
